Bookmark Making

Introduction

Welcome, I will be using this page to upload all of my bookmark making. The novel I was given was I Am Legend. I was happy with this because I have heard of it before and I know of it very well.

First Ideas

This is where i drew all of my first ideas. Next to them I wrote about what colour options I could take and how I could make them. My favourite idea was the one in the shape of a zombie arm.

CMYK is the four main colours that are used for printing. It stands for Cyan. Magenta, yellow and key. These colours are used because they are the ones the printer responses to and help it to product high quality photos when printing. A Photoshop file should be 300dpi when sending to print because it will come out in the right proportion and will not distort itself in anyway. You should send a PDF to the printers by email, it will come out at a better quality and will be the full size of the page instead of it resizing.

My bookmark is based on the book of I Am Legend and my design was inspired by the zombies/monsters inside the novel. I did have lots of ideas for my bookmark like having it the shape of a zombie or the shape of some thangs. I wanted to stay away from the square shape and make something unique.  The idea of the zombie arm was my favourite and as soon as I thought of it I knew I wanted to make it.  I had the fingers stretched out as if it was going to grab some one. I thought this would be good because it would look like the monsters are actually climbing out of the book and trying to get the reader.

I wanted to use a lot of colour but the theme of the book was quite dark and dull so I used some bright colour where it worked. I made the general skin colour a green/mould colour to make it look as if the skin is dirty and dead. On the end of the fingers I added red to make it as if there was blood on them like they only just ate something. I think the use of my colour that I used worked well because it seemed to fit the theme of the book with the pale mouldy green but then the red blood brightens it up. There is still a lot of black on it but I think it really works as the book is old and so it makes the bookmark look old as well.

My use of text on the back of my bookmark had to be linked to the book it some way so I wanted it to be solid and confident and give the audiences a clue towards what the books about. I used a font that was sharp and looked a little old. In my mind I wanted one that you would see to describe a horror movie because of the monsters. I think this makes the bookmark feel more scary and old just like the book. I think it also helps to get the reader into the novel and is in the same theme. I wanted the colour of my text to be black so it stood out on my bookmark back and fitted into the book more.

I wanted my bookmark to be more cartoon than real because I thought it would look better. If it was real then I think it would look a little stupid the way the skin was green. I think it looks really effective, as I have tried to add as much detail into the bold as possible. For example, to add shadow I used a dark red colour to add shadows in the blood. I did this to make it look more realistic as a zombie arm.

What I done to get the bookmark shape was I searched the Internet for a zombie arm; I then put that into Illustrator and traced over it. I added all the other lines, blood and detail my self. I think this was a good way of doing it because it would have been hard to draw it free hand on the computer or on paper.

When I first look at the bookmark I look straight toward the hand that’s covered in blood because it’s as if they are reaching out to grab me.  However, because I haven’t got the name of the book on the front then people might think it’s for something else like the walking dead or another zombie film. Then why they see its for I am legend then it could surprise them.

For tools and techniques I used Illustrator, the main image was from Google images but it was only the outline so I had the fill the inside my self with the lines and details of the fingers. I used the computer to draw the whole thing and didn’t do anything from hand.

I think the most successful part of my design is that I think that my ideas were different from the rest. I like the dullness of the skin but the brightness of the blood as they contradict each other. I think it was good that I had lots of ideas for mine as I could change at any time. If I had to do anything different then I think I wouldn’t change anything because I kept to my time limits and everything turned out really well.
